A Singular Success: Fat City

David J. West writes dark fantasy and weird westerns because the voices in his head won’t quiet until someone else can hear them. He is a great fan of sword & sorcery, ghosts and lost ruins, so of course he lives in Utah with his wife and children.

While I'll admit it cannot be easy to do, it's obviously not impossible.. even if you have no grasp of spelling, grammar, or how to plot a novel, the book stores are filled with that sort of stuff..
to me, I think these sorts of purposefully discouraging things only serve to run off the people who might actually be good writers but can't deal with the depression brought on by this sort of stuff.. since as the video clearly illustrates the idiots won't be discouraged no matter what.... and the next thing you know they are driving racecars and talking about how their books involve important human themes.
Right on Lagomorph, there is a lot of garbage in print. Still I have to acknowledge the dedication of anyone who actually writes and finishes a novel-even if I think its tripe.
oh absolutely, I can't fault anyone for writing a novel.. and I'll be the last one to say that I don't wish them well. But it is annoying that the system is supposedly so soul crushingly difficult to gain traction in.. yet all these people who clearly lack talent manage to do it.
But I think the odds are actually not that bad if you are persistent with sending in manuscripts to agents.. as the numbers of new books that come out just in the sci-fi/fantasy field is pretty impressive.
I think it really can best be summed up in the immortal words of Optimus Prime:"Now all we need is a little energon, and lot of luck"..
On the plus side, it seems to be much easier to get a non fiction book published as a first time writer than a fiction one.. though the money is usually smaller.. should make one "The complete retard's guide to writing a re-tread of Star Wars and making a fortune doing it"...
hilarious! Did you make this?
Yeah Lagomorph, my understanding is non-fiction is an easier sale-you just need to present yourself as an expert.
But for all the people that make it-they are untold thousands more you never hear of-even if they are published.
Oh no Tamara-I didn't make it, I just found it and thought I'd share.
That was awesome. I need to show this to everyone who says, "I've been thinking about writing a book." I'll start with my dentist.
Carolina-awesome! It'll be worth a laugh.
David, we need more people like the the dreamer in this video. They make us look better.
LOL. That was funny. Thanks for sharing.
Dan-I am sure they are out there.
Angie-you're welcome.
Oh, my gosh!! That's exactly what I thought when I wrote my very first 50 pages. I had no idea how ignorant I was back then. There were times when I was discouraged to the point of quitting, but the love of writing wouldn't leave my heart. I've learned soooo much in the last three years, and I know I still need to learn more. But I'm lovin' every minute of the process. Painfully funny video.
I hear ya Debra, I know I have learned an awful lot this last year and it never ends.
Such a fabulous description of the naiveté of aspiring writers. I certainly know I don't know everything about the craft or the industry, but I have no illusions that it's a simple road or that it will all come naturally and easily.
Still, I plan to stay on the path rain or shine.
Thanks for the laugh...great vid. :)
You're welcome Okie.
Hi David,
Just stumbled across your blog -- I'm the author of the animated video, and I just wanted to thank you for posting it here. I enjoyed reading all the comments here.

You're more than welcome David-wish I could remember where I came across it in the first place-had to be some other writers blog.
