Choose Your Own Adventure: Apocalypse Island

Now don't get me wrong, I WANT TO BELIEVE but History Channel's latest offering Apocalypse Island really left something to be desired. The shots of the supposed Mayan monuments on a remote south pacific island looked more like natural weathering to me. In fact all of the pics on the net I could find look even worse than what I saw on the program and I found absolutely no reason to post them and try to show anyone. I can't get no satisfaction-sorry listening to my Pandora mix and hey it fit anywho.
This is what the History Channel actually posts about the program."Does a remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean hold the final clue to the Mayans apocalyptic predictions concerning 2012? One explorer thinks he's discovered the answers that have eluded man for centuries. Jim Turner stumbled on this remote artifact over a decade ago and has spent the past ten years preparing an expedition to prove that this is the place they foretold that the gods would come to watch the final minutes of civilization as we know it."It's sensationalist drivel. Yes it's a good spot to see an eclipse in 2012-but so what? In trying to put to words my frustration over the programs lack of any real data, I came away with the thought that these dudes were pulling a Choose Your Own Adventure. They were making it up-seeing what they wanted to see. Might as well have been seeing Mayan monuments in cloud formations. That hurts because I have done the same thing plenty of times but I had to call this spade a spade. For your nostalgic enjoyment take a look at the covers for some of my favorite old Choose Your Own Adventure books. Good stuff from my youth. Some of them may not be as popular as they could have been but still a good read back in the day.

I loved these as a kid. Just introduced my boys to title we found at the library. Too fun.

Thanks for the laugh, David. I could see quite a few of your writing influences in the books shown here.

;)

I could also picture you writing one of these some day.

I get pretty irritated when the "nonfiction" channels go for speculative BS like that myself. Everything has become infotainment, with very little info.

Thanks everybody.

Daron you really see influences? I am not aware of any but maybe I'm to close.

Charles, exactly. I am all for speculation but there has to be some kind of grounding in real possibility, not just "Hey doesn't this ridgeline look like something? And we are out in the middle of nowhere and it might relate to something else."

IF History Channel had actually had someone examine IF these "Monuments" were carved and IF there was the slightest shred of evidence that people carved them-awesome.

But they didn't give us anything but a couple of yahoo's speculating on the what-IF's without any grounding in evidence but "IT kinda looks like".

I would give Lovecraft another shot if I could find that book.

WOW, you totally just brought me back. I had completely forgotten about those "Choose your own adventure" books! That's awesome.

By the way, I don't buy the whole 2012 Mayan end of the world prediction. It doesn't scientifically add up. It makes me laugh to hear some of the stuff revolving around it, but I know some people swear by it, so everyone has their choice to believe it or not. I know that wasn't the point of the post but I just saw that snippet and wanted to comment. :)

It is the rarest of Lovecraft books Th. right behind an original Necronomicon.

Voidwalker. Actually, (I hate saying that) but it was kind of the point, I was just dressing it up a little with the joke Choose Your Own Adventure Books, which I did love as a kid.

I'm still laughing at those covers. Totally awesome.

I have a love/hate thing with the History Channel. Half what they put out is pure garbage. The other half is pretty cool and education. Well, 2012 doesn't make me miss having cable. (Life without cable has many additional benefits.)

Oh yeah, I'm getting irritated at all the reality TV History Channel is putting out too-I want more ancient history with some basis in fact not Ax Men, Pickers, Madhouse, Pawn Stars, Ice Road Truckers, and enough with Nostradamos already.
