Amidst a sea of backlogged projects, current deadlines and things
I simply have to get out of my head and onto paper, I'm still doing a
few shorts.
My logic (or obtuse flakiness) is to keep flexing and working
those writing muscles.
I figure, I like what I like, which is why I find myself rereading
old favorites again and again ~ BUT I also believe that to improve my
own craft, skill and general output you have to do what you have not
done before...
So, I've been experimenting with writing shorts a little outside
of my comfort zone and taking on topics that while still bordering on
my own thoughts and concerns aren't what I might otherwise write.
I'm thinking these exercises will expand my overall abilities and
reach. At least that's the plan.
I would like to hear if anybody else came to these same
conclusions, even if like me you prefer genre material overall.

I'd say some muscle stretching and bulking wouldn't hurt, as long as they don't pull too much time away from bigger pieces that you really want to write.
My schedule is chaotic enough that I work on certain things when they hit me.
I just have to be working on something.
I continue to stretch, writing what I can, when I can and I must admit that at times it is a form of procrastination, just like blogging can be. Oh well...maybe I'll be more structured in my next life.
I hear you Donna, my fourth grade teacher told me I needed a secretary.
I think she was right.
